CADET DEATH

Aspiring West Point cadet dies in cliff-diving accident

HUNTER, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a Nebraska man enrolled in West Point’s preparatory school for potential cadets has died in a cliff-diving accident in the Catskills.

The U.S. Military Academy says in a release that cadet candidate Benjamin Bochtler died Saturday in the town of Hunter, where he’d gone during his free time. Bochtler was 20 and came from Bellevue, Nebraska.

New York state police say he was hanging onto a rock ledge at a spot known as Fawn’s Leap when a piece of rock broke off and sent him tumbling.

Bochtler entered West Point Prep in July. He had already served about three years in the Army, including a deployment in Afghanistan from April 2018 to January 2019.

The school enrolls soldiers and civilians aiming to become cadets and eventually Army officers.

NEBRASKA STATE FAIR-RIDE RESCUE

Riders safe after tram stalls mid-air at Nebraska State Fair

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) — About 45 people stranded on a stalled tram 40 feet above the Nebraska State Fair have been rescued.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that riders were stuck on the ride for about an hour Sunday night.

State Fair safety consultant Ed LaSalle watched the rescue. He says high-reach devices with fenced platforms were extended up to the tram cars. State Fair workers then helped load up passengers to be taken down.

LaSalle says no one was at risk of falling. He says there was an issue with the tram’s hydraulic drive system that caused it to stall mid-air.

LaSalle says the tram is under repair Monday. That’s the last day of the fair.

NIGHTCLUB SHOOTING-LINCOLN

2 injured in shooting at Lincoln nightclub

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Lincoln police are investigating after two people were injured in a shooting outside a nightclub.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. Saturday outside the Royal Grove nightclub. Police responded to a call of shots fired on the club’s parking lot and found evidence of a shooting but no victims.

But a short time later, a woman arrived at a hospital with a gunshot wound that police say occurred outside the club. She was treated and released with minor injuries.

Meanwhile, a man showed up at an Omaha hospital with a minor gunshot wound also sustained outside the Lincoln nightclub.

No arrests have been made.

NORTH PLATTE AIRPORT-TAXIWAY

North Platte airport planning taxiway improvement project

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) — The North Platte Airport Authority says a $5 million taxiway improvement project will take place next year.

Television station KNOP reports that the airport authority has approved a nearly 18% budget increase for their 2019-2020 fiscal year to help cover the cost of the project.

A federal airport improvement program grant will cover 90 percent of the cost.

The project is expected to break ground next spring.

The airport also plans to add an additional flight on Sundays to and from Denver. If approved next month, the change is expected to go into effect the last week in October.

FOOD FOR FINES

Kearney library kicks off Food for Fines drive in September

KEARNEY, Neb. (AP) — Owe the Kearney Public Library or Buffalo County Bookmobile fines for overdue books? Bring in a donation for the local food pantry in early September, and the library will call it even.

The Kearney Hub reports that the library’s Food for Fines drive will run from Tuesday through Sept. 15.

Patrons may bring non-perishable food items to the library or bookmobile. In exchange, the library will waive late fines. The food will be donated to the Mid-Nebraska Food Bank.

One donated food item will waive $1 of library fines. Fees related to lost, damaged, or interlibrary loan materials are not eligible to be waived.

Expired food items will not be accepted.

Food items must be brought in to the main desk during open hours, or to the bookmobile.

Revenge porn, abortion laws among new laws taking effect

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska will clamp down on so-called revenge porn, take aim at scam phone calls from fake numbers and impose new requirements on abortion providers under new state laws.

The 170 new laws officially go on the books Sunday, three months after this year’s legislative session ended.

Other new laws will impose new standards for civics lessons in schools, crack down on human traffickers and make it illegal to tattoo the whites of a person’s eyes except when it’s medically necessary.

Still other laws will shield farmers from public nuisance lawsuits and require state law enforcement to study cases involving missing Native American women.
