STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The NYC Winter Lantern Festival offers so much more than 1,000 over-the-top LED displays this season.
Entertainers are set to hit the South Meadow stage at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden in Livingston every night throughout the festival, which runs until Jan. 12. All of the performances lean on traditional Asian culture for inspiration.
The live entertainment includes plate and bowl spinning, seesaw bowl balance, hoop tumbling, straw hat juggling, hand-to-hand acrobatic acts, Tibetan folk dance and a face-changing magician -- a sub-genre of Chinese Sichuan Opera performers who wear vibrant costumes and magically transform traditional opera masks from one to another.

All the performances, which are 30 minutes long and free to watch with festival admission, take place Wednesday and Thursday at 6, 7 and 8 p.m., and Friday through Sunday at 6, 7, 8 and 9 p.m.
The action doesn’t stop there. A holiday skating rink is new to the festival lineup this year.
It is not necessary to attend the NYC Winter Lantern Festival in order to go skating. Tickets, which can be purchased at the rink, are $15 for skaters 13 and older and $10 for children ages 3 to 12. Any child under 5 must be accompanied by an adult. Skates are available on-site, and skate time is not limited.
HOW TO ATTEND
NYC Winter Lantern Festival hours are Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 9:30 p.m., and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5 to 10:30 p.m. The festival is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, with the exception of Dec. 30 and 31, when it will be open from 5 to 10:30 p.m.
General admission is $23 per person; $20 for students and seniors with proper ID, and $17 for children ages 12 and younger. A group rate of $18 per person is available for parties of 30 or more.
