Vision 2020: The Next Decade Will Bring Entertainment From 2D Back To 3D - Forbes

As we anxiously wonder how technology will make us smile in 2020, get ready for an infusion of entertainment in 3D format, with experiences that will mix digital and physical content. Thanks to this trend, the 2020’s will be known for bringing entertainment ‘back to 3D’.

Prior to the 1900’s, live entertainment happened on stages, parks, and stadiums, with 3D real-world experiences. The first film was produced in 1878 with a 16 minute horse ride clip, and since then 2D entertainment has taken over: large screens in cinema, medium screens on TV, and in the last couple of decades, small screens on mobile devices. Couch potatoes were born, and now we even use cell phones as a second screens when content on the larger screen is not enough.

Also in the last couple of decades, IMAX screens, 3D filming, and virtual reality (VR) have brought us from 2D to 3D content, although still in passive couch potato mode. That’s going to change in the next decade, so get ready for some action.

A mix of digital technologies will bring back the full 3D experience, be it VR combined with real sensory experience, the real world augmented with digital overlays through a mobile device or lens (augmented reality or AR), or the real world augmented with 3D holograms (mixed reality or MR).

These technologies combined (also known as X Reality or XR) will bring a new decade of interactive entertainment. The underpinnings of what’s coming are already here. For example, Dreamscape Immersive produces 3D adventures that merge real and digitally immersive, sensory experiences.

The key for these innovations to prosper will be to make them natural and social. VR that simply tries to convert 2D content (let’s say an action movie) into 3D format for the couch potato is not as natural, because you are tethered to a device or screen. Also, it’s ok if you want to immerse yourself into the content in isolation, but it’s often missing the social and naturally interactive element. That’s why VR hasn’t become mainstream.

Turn the page to the 3D entertainment of the next decade, where you will not just immerse into a virtual world, but you will also be sensing the real world around you, enhanced with digital scenes. You will be able to move and to interact with the environment, even with real people.

Curtis Augspurger, XR creative producer and head of production at Category 41, states: “Starting in 2020 we’ll begin to realize and deliver the demand for content that strives to connect us and elevate the human condition. We expect that boundaries between the digital magic of Hollywood and the living performances of Broadway will blend into seamless destination experiences. Audiences will no longer sit and observe the old-school 2D presentation, but become part of it themselves.”

XR is going to start permeating many aspects and sectors of media and entertainment. An example is advertising, where 3D immersive experiences will be increasingly used to promote and sell products and services. This will also be the case in gaming. Expect to see more games and eSports that get us off our couches and laptops to physical cages or arenas where digital scenes overlay real settings so you can hit a ball without really hitting it or ascend Mount Everest with your friends, without an oxygen tank or thick outerwear. Literally, the sky is the limit.

The 2020’s will bring new and exciting media and entertainment on a 3D landscape. 2D content will always be there for passive entertainment, but I can’t wait to get off my couch and live a healthier lifestyle while having fun.
